Example comparing possible earnings under a form of the RED initiative that resulted in a 50 percent reduction from the 2000-2005 annual average deforestation rate. These figures are rough estimates based on calculations by Mongabay.com using the assumptions: [one half of average annual deforestation rates (FAO)] x [average carbon in biomass for specific countries (FAO, other sources)] x [2/3 (the amount of carbon that is released into the atmosphere, 1/3 remains in the system)] x [$37.50 per ton of carbon, rough estimate on the revenue to a country after transaction costs]. Value of "industrial roundwood" for logging and "Wood fuel" are mostly derived from FAO, though other sources are used for Papua New Guinea. Image by Rhett A. Butler, click to enlarge
